Vexillology derives from Roman word “vexillum” means banner. In the other word, Vexillology is a study program which focuses on flag. In the study, the scholars learn about flags histories, designs, symbols, etiquette, and many other things related to flags.

 The study program is under International Federation of Vexillological Associations and ICV as the organization that always hold international gathering every two years. Through the study program, we can find various meanings of symbols in flag, identify flags, learn about flag and culture, and many other interesting things related to flags. The study is needed when we are working in the government or institutions, or even when we want to build our own organization.

 In general, Vexillology is representing the study of flags. However, to enrich the definition of Vexillology, the well known vexillologist from US, Whitney Smith is defining Vexillology as a study of all types of flag including their principles, forms, theories, and function.

 Not only Whitney Smith is enriching the Vexillology definition, but also adding the subject of Vexillology: flag identification. The subject is very beneficial for flag identification. For example, flag for civilians, government, and military. With the identification, we will be able to know whose ship we see in the ocean or what kind of institution in our area.
